SASSA R370 Grant Application Status Explained

SASSA R350 Grant Application Statuses Explained

When applying for the SASSA R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant, understanding the different application statuses can be challenging. ‘

Each status represents a stage in the processing or payment of your application, and knowing what each one means can guide you on what to do next. Below, we explain the four main statuses you may encounter during your application process:

    1. Pending Status

If you see “Pending” status on your SASSA application, it means that your application has not been approved yet. SASSA will compare the details that you provided with the government records, including Department of Home Affairs and Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), to check your eligibility against the criteria accepted to receive the grant.

You are not required to do anything; “pending” is the normal status and just implies queuing for review. SASSA checks that you’re unemployed and not receiving UIF or other government financial assistance. If the status of your application continues to show as pending for more than 90 days, you will have to do some follow-up.

Update visit to check your SASSA status on the official SASSA Status page for awareness. Don’t rush in trying to call them if your application remains pending for an unreasonably long time. With millions of applications on the SASSA database, there’s always patience required while you wait for something to give.

    2. Approved Status

It means you fulfill all the requirements for the R350 grant if your SASSA application status shows Approved. But the approval does not mean you have been paid. SASSA has performed all interim checks, and you are now eligible for the grant, but the payment is yet to follow.

After the approval, SASSA will confirm your payment option via SMS. You can then choose your payment option, whether that would be through a post office or a retail store. If your banking details are not yet verified, this could result in a longer waiting time for payment. Sometimes, the time frame for payment could still be undetermined even if an application has been accepted due to some processing delays or confirmations still being pending.

To avoid further delays, you should check and ensure that your banking details are properly filled out in the case that SASSA requires that information for verification. Usually, it takes about seven business days for the payment to be made; however, it may take longer than that. If you see your status as ‘Paid’ and you’ve noticed no payment has been made to you, call SASSA and ask the bank for help.

    3. Declined Status

If your SASSA application shows “Declined,” it means you don’t meet the requirements for the R350 grant. This decision is based on a review of your details, and there are several reasons why it might happen. Some common reasons include not meeting the age limit (18-60 years), having an income above R624 per month, or receiving other government assistance like UIF or social grants.

Mistakes in your application, such as incorrect ID numbers or banking details, can also lead to rejection. Another reason is the means test failure, where SASSA detects any income above the allowed threshold. If this happens, your application won’t be approved.

If you think the decline was a mistake, you can appeal the decision on the SASSA website. If incorrect details caused the issue, update your information and reapply. Always check your application for errors and ensure you meet all the eligibility criteria before submitting. If you were wrongly declined due to UIF or another reason, file an appeal with supporting documents to correct the mistake.

    4. Referred Status

If your SASSA application shows “Referred,” it means your details are being checked by other government departments before a final decision is made. This usually happens if there are discrepancies or concerns that require further verification. Your application might be sent to the Department of Home Affairs, UIF, or other agencies to confirm your information.

A referred status is not a rejection. In most cases (about 90%), applications that go through this extra check still get approved. Sometimes, SASSA refers applications randomly as part of fraud prevention measures. This process can take longer than usual, so some delays are expected.

For now, you don’t need to take any action unless SASSA contacts you for more details. Keep checking your application status on the SASSA website for updates. If your application is still in the referred stage after a long time, you can reach out to SASSA for further clarification.

    Additional Statuses and Their Meanings

    1. Identity Verification Failed

    • Meaning: SASSA could not match your identity details with the Department of Home Affairs records.
    • What To Do: Double-check your ID number, name, and other personal details. Make sure they match exactly with what’s on your Home Affairs records. If needed, update your information and try again.

    2. Period Pending

    • Meaning: Your application is still under review, and SASSA has not started processing it yet.
    • What To Do: Keep checking your status regularly. Ensure that all your information is correct to avoid unnecessary delays.

    3. Period Approved

    • Meaning: SASSA has approved your application for this period, and your SRD payment will be made soon.
    • What To Do: Confirm that your banking details are correct. Then, wait for the payment to reflect in your account.

    4. Period Declined

    • Meaning: SASSA has declined your payment for this month, but you might qualify for the next one.
    • What To Do: Find out the reason for the decline. Fix any issues that might have caused it, and check if you need to appeal or update your details.

    5. Means Income Source Identified

    • Meaning: SASSA found that your monthly income is above the R624 threshold, making you ineligible for the grant.
    • What To Do: Check if the income information is correct. If you believe SASSA made an error, appeal the decision and provide proof of your financial situation.

According to the search results, a pending process can take anywhere from hours to months, with an average resolution time of up to 14 days. However, some applications may take as long as 3 weeks to process. Once approved, payments typically take up to 7 days to be issued.

Millions of South Africans rely on SASSA grants for survival, as poverty affects over 55.5% of the population, and unemployment is at 32.9% in 2025 (World Bank).

Why Was My SASSA Application Declined

If your bank balance is more than R624, SASSA may reject your SRD grant application. This grant is meant for people without a stable income, so having too much money in your account can make you ineligible.

SASSA can also deny you the grant if you receive some funds from other government institutions like UIF or NSFAS. SRD Grant is only for people without any financial support.

Rejection can also occur due to supplying wrong information. Wrong ID number, phone number, and a bad bank detail can cause complications as things get thoroughly verified by SASSA through its personal and financial records.

Others are missing or incomplete documentation, non-fulfillment of residency and dependency rules, or having legal disqualifications. A mismatch between your identity verification and official records could lead SASSA to refuse the application.

Moreover, one must qualify as per the age limit related to the grant in its terms. Hence, your application is most likely to be rejected if the mean test findings are erroneous or financial requirements are not complied with.

    Steps After a Decline

If your application is declined, the reason will be noted in the status. Here’s what you should do next:

    • Appeal the Decision
If you think there was an error, follow the appeal process.
    • Correct and Reapply
If incorrect details caused the rejection, fix the errors and submit a new application.
    • Wait for Communication
SASSA may reach out for further information, so monitor your communication channels closely.

Why SASSA Payments May Be Delayed

Delays in SASSA grant payments can occur for several reasons, including:

    • High Application Volumes: A surge in applications can slow processing times.
    • Public Holidays and Weekends: Bank closures can result in delays.
    • Technical Issues: Network outages or system errors may cause interruptions.
    • Administrative Backlogs: Data entry or paperwork delays are common.
    • Lengthy Verification Checks: Verifying your eligibility may take time.
    • Cross-Checking Identity: SASSA often cross-references details with Home Affairs, which can take a while.
    • Income Verification: Verifying other sources of income or dependency can also cause delays.

Be patient as SASSA works through these factors.

Once all the details are filled out, submit your appeal. Your case will be reviewed by an independent body, ITSAA (Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals). Decisions typically take 60 to 90 days.

Understanding SASSA Status: Approved but No Payment Date?

If your grant application shows as approved but there’s no payment date, it could be due to verification delays. Here’s how to handle it:

    • Monitor the SASSA Website: Keep an eye on the website for updates on payment dates. Use your ID number to log in for real-time information.
    • Be Patient: SASSA processes a high volume of applications, which can cause unavoidable delays.
    • Contact SASSA for Assistance: Call 0800 60 10 11 or visit your local office if you have any concerns. Be sure to have your ID number ready for a faster response.

Ensuring Your Banking Information is Correct

It’s critical to ensure that your banking details are correct to avoid payment issues. Here’s how:

    • Check Online
Log into the SASSA website to confirm or update your banking information.
    • Confirm with Your Bank
Sometimes the issue could be on the bank’s end. Contact them to verify that they received the correct details from SASSA.

    R370 SRD Grant Payment Methods

The SRD (Social Relief of Distress) Status Check, also known as the SASSA Status Check, helps applicants track the progress of their R370 Social Relief Grant application. This grant provides financial aid to unemployed South Africans, especially those struggling due to economic hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Available Payment Methods

Beneficiaries have several payment options to receive their SRD grant. However, bank account transfers are the fastest and most secure method. This option allows direct deposits, helping recipients access their funds quickly without standing in long lines at Post Office branches or retail stores.

    Why Accurate Banking Details Matter

Providing correct banking details is essential for smooth payments. SASSA requires that the bank account be registered in the applicant’s name to avoid processing delays or rejected payments. Incorrect details can lead to failed transactions and delayed grants.

How to Update Your Banking Information

If you need to change your banking details, follow these steps:

    • Click the link and follow the instructions to update your banking details.
    • Visit the official SASSA website at srd.sassa.gov.za.
    • Select either “SA ID Holder” or “Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders.”
    • Find the section labeled “How do I change my banking details?”
    • Enter your ID number and submit.
    • SASSA will send a secure link to your registered mobile number.

    Receiving Your SASSA Grant Payment

If you have a bank account, SASSA will send an SMS once your grant is deposited. Alternatively, payments can be collected at participating retailers like Shoprite, USave, Pick n Pay, or Boxer Stores using the last three digits of your ID number. Keep in mind, the Post Office no longer processes SRD grant payments.

By following these steps and ensuring your application details are correct, you can navigate the SASSA appeal process and avoid common pitfalls that delay your grant payment.

    Updating/Changing Bank Details Online

If you need to update or add a new bank account for any reason, you can do so through the SRD website. To start the process, simply enter your ID number to begin updating your bank account information.
